Gray Squirrels 2017-18: Week 5 - Mapping, Nature Crafts & Fire Challenges

November 21, 2017

Opening Circle

At today's opening circle we shared about a person in our lives that we are thankful for. Some shared about friends, some about family members, and it was very sweet to hear about who is important to everyone, and the reasons why.

Sound Map

After snack we worked as a group to create a sound map. First, we all closed our eyes and listened for every sound that we could hear, remembering which direction each sound came from. Next we drew our circle in the middle of a piece of paper, and then took turns drawing or writing the different things that we heard, in the directions we heard them from.

Exploration Teams

Next, we split into our clans, and with Nature Journals in hand, set off in different directions to map our territory.

Holiday Crafts

We had so much fun with Natural Pigments last week, that we decided to explore more crafts, with a holiday theme this week!

Fire Challenge!

As the weather gets cooler, we have begun exploring fire! We got our community fire going with a bow drill kit and learned some new fire songs.

We then broke up into small groups to practice building our own fires. What does a fire need to survive? Heat, air and fuel! We also talked about the ways to keep a fire safe - working with fire is a responsibility and a privilege, just like we learned in our Firekeepers story a few weeks ago.

Using that info, we experimented with different

structures for our fires. Each group had three matches to try to get their fire going and burn for at least 10 minutes.

We didn't have any successful challenges today, but we sure had fun! Some of us also had fun learning how to use the bow drill, no coals yet, but almost!
