Kathryn Waple’s Tuesday class was interrupted by a visitor -- a spindly-legged spider floating on a web parachute.

Grabbing her field guide, Waple scrambled to ID the arachnid, but a clumsy dragonfly bumped it off course. Her watching students went back to their classwork -- examining animal tracks, comparing leaves and sculpting with creek mud.
